Max Verstappen — Walk-Away Value 2027

The most-asked question in the current driver market: what would it actually cost a rival team to sign Max Verstappen if a Red Bull performance clause activates and the seat opens? We model it in three components — base, commercial multiplier, and displacement cost — and land on a defensible band.

Estimated 2026 base
~$65M
Red Bull team-side salary
Walk-away band
$85–120M
Total annual package to a rival
Commercial multiplier
1.6–1.9×
Applied to base salary

The three components

1. Base salary uplift — the easy math.

Any rival buying Verstappen out of a Red Bull performance-clause exit pays a premium over the reference $65M base — call it 15–25% uplift ($75–82M) to reflect the risk-transfer and multi-year lock.

2. Commercial multiplier — the number teams underestimate.

Verstappen's 1.6–1.9× commercial multiplier isn't merch. It's the price a title sponsor pays to be on a Verstappen car versus a top-4 car with a good-but-not-generational driver. On a $30–40M title-sponsor slot, that delta alone is $18–36M/year — which is why Mercedes-scale teams can absorb an apparently absurd salary.

3. Displacement cost — the number ONLY the incoming team sees.

To sign Verstappen, a team must exit a current driver — buyouts, image-rights unwinds, sponsor-clause renegotiations. On the plausible destinations (Mercedes, Aston Martin, Ferrari), this adds $8–20M/year amortised across the contract. This is what makes the walk-away band land at $85–120M, not $80M flat.
